ReferMessage Stack

show a message when a visitor lands on your page from a certain URL

Use this stack to welcome your visitors with a message that depends on the site they came from.

Demos
I added several copies of the ReferMessage Stack to this page, with messages for those landed on this page after clicking on a certain link (on another page on this site, my blog (fig. 1) and on through my newsletter).

The message is shown above. In case you don’t see any welcome message, please visit my blog post about this stack and use the link to the product page to return to this page – with a message this time.

Usage
  • Drop a stack that can contain text into the dropzone of this stack.
  • Set (a part of) the url where the visitor should come from to see the message.
Make sure the string you set in the stack is specific enough.
  • Optionally, you can show the URL your visitor came from in the content of the stack:
  • Select the option use URL in text.
Give the message an ID that is unique for the page (use only a‑z, A‑Z, 0‑9, no spaces, no punctuation marks or other special characters).
To show the referring URL (the page your visitor came from) in your text, use the code <span id="UNIQUE_ID"></span> (fig. 2).
Replace UNIQUE_ID with the ID you set in 3b.
Select the code and apply Format > Clear Formatting.
Select the code and apply Format > Clear Formatting.
  • Optionally, show the content of the stack in Preview mode.
With both this option and the option use URL in text enabled, a placeholder text will be shown (fig. 3) where the URL will be once the page is published (fig. 4).
Warning
When you use the ReferMessage Stack on a http page, and the referring page is a https page, the referrer URL is deleted for security reasons. This means that the content of the stack will not show. The referrer URL can also be deliberately stripped out by the site owner. In this case, the content of the ReferMessage Stack stack will not also show.

Workaround
When you want to use the ReferMessage Stack on a http page, and the referring page is a https page, you will need to use a workaround. I developed a stack for this (the ReferMessageRedirect Stack) that is included with the download of this stack. Read more about this workaround and the ReferMessageRedirect Stack.

If your site is still on http, it’s a good idea to migrate to https anyway: better SEO ranking, more information in Google Analytics, potentially performance,…

When you want to use the ReferMessage Stack on a https page, you will need not need the ReferMessageRedirect Stack.

Need help using it on a non-stacks page? Here’s a tutorial.

Limitations
  • With Javascript turned off, the message will not show.
  • Keep in mind that this stack will hide the message(s). This means that all content will be loaded into the page, so don’t make things too heavy.
  • The message will only show when a visitor actually click a links on the referring page, not with redirects like shortened URLs etc.
  • For security reasons, the referrer URL is deleted when navigating from a https site to a http site. It can also be deliberately stripped out by the site owner. In these cases, the stack will not show the message.
